Nintendo just announced Tetris battle royale and no, we’re not joking

Fortnite, PUBG, Black Ops 4 and now Apex Legends may be fighting gallantly for battle royale supremacy, but none stand a chance against the newest kid on the block.

Ladies and gentlemen, get ready for Tetris battle royale.

The concept of a Tetris battle royale is so bizarre, unexpected and downright insane that I’m inclined to go full circle and say it’s going to be the greatest thing the world has ever seen.

So how does it work? Tetris 99 is a first-person shooter where players assume control of their preferred block — L-shape, Z-shape, T-shape, Line or Square — each with its own weapons, stats and special abilities.

Players are dropped on an island from a flying spaceship and must duke it out within a continually shrinking circle, scavenging weapons and other gear along the way, until just one block remains.

Okay, just kidding. Tetris 99 is actually an all-out online multiplayer puzzle battle between, you guessed it, 99 players. Everyone starts an individual game of Tetris at the same time and clears lines as per usual. The difference here is that every time you clear multiple lines, extra rows with gaps, or “garbage”, will appear on the bottom of your opponents’ screens.

Prevent the blocks from reaching the top of your own screen, as you would in classic Tetris, until you’re the last surviving player.

Tetris 99 will be available today for all Nintendo Switch Online members as a free-to-play title. We have no evidence to suggest this means there’ll be microtransactions, but let’s just assume it has $2.49 Tetrachestsā„¢ stocked with silly hats, customisable military skins and ultra-rare golden blocks.

The announcement came during today’s Nintendo Direct, and the company says the game will include periodic events to keep players interested. Here’s the spiel from Nintendo in the official reveal:

“The iconic puzzle game arrives with an online experience like no other. Nintendo Switch Online members can battle for dominance in this free-to-download game.

If you’re attacked with garbage, attack back to defeat the other 98 players and become the sole survivor.”
