A Chinese company is using AI to make its sex dolls seem more human

Do you ever look at your sex doll and wish it was just a bit more human?

Well, good news. A company in China is using artificial intelligence to make their dolls just a little bit more realistic.

WM Dolls, which is based in the province of Guangdong, have had their ‘smart’ dolls on the market since the end of 2016. The AI-powered models are customisable – skin tone, hairstyle, height, and eye and nail colour are up to the purchaser, as are other, more adult options – and the dolls can both move and speak.

While the AI being used doesn’t have enough power to allow the dolls to hold a conversation, they can answer basic questions, with their vocabulary supported by a database supplied by Baidu – the Chinese tech megacorporation and one of the world’s biggest investors in AI.

“Of course we’re not expecting to make our AI dolls that human-like, after all we’re just making adult products,” Liu Ding, WMDOLL product manager, told Reuters. “But we will surely add more advanced technologies… for example making the limbs move more naturally.”

WM Dolls aren’t the only ones using AI to create more realistic sex dolls. Last year, California-based Abyss Creations showed off an AI-powered prototype named Harmony, which could reportedly hold a conversation, quote Shakespeare, and remember your birthday and favourite foods.

“There are a lot of people out there, for one reason or another, who have difficulty forming traditional relationships with other people,” creator Matt McMullen told The Guardian. “It’s really all about giving those people some level of companionship – or the illusion of companionship.”

Sex and the adult industry have long been a huge force for driving technology forward – it’s been a long-standing, arguably untrue, story that the VHS vs Beta format war of the ’80s and early ’90s was decided by the porn industry siding with VHS, even though Beta offered superior quality.
