Dazzling southern lights captured in stunning time-lapse from space

The southern lights, or aurora australis, have put on a truly spectacular show for the astronauts working at the International Space Station this week.

Ten days into the Horizons mission on the ISS, astronaut Alexander Gerst witnessed the dancing green lights first-hand and put together a stunning 950-image time-lapse of the spectacle – with images taken twice a second over 38 seconds.

Aurora australis may not be as famous as its counterpart in the northern hemisphere, but this footage proves it’s just as incredible.
