Elon Musk issues chilling warning about the threat of artificial intelligence

Elon Musk has doubled down on his grim view on the evolution of artificial intelligence, stating in a recent documentary that AI could become the doom of mankind.

Do You Trust This Computer? is a new documentary directed by James Barrat (Nova, National Geographic Explorer) and produced by Papercut Films, the team behind the popular film Revenge of the Electric Car in 2011.

Do You Trust This Computer? features interviews with many prominent scientists, economists, politicians and inventors, among them famous futurist Ray Kurzweil and IBM researcher David Ferrucci.

Musk has stated his reservations on AI many times before. Just a couple of weeks ago at SXSW, Musk said AI could be the responsible of World War III and be the bringer of a new “Dark Age”.

“This is a case where you have a very serious danger to the public, therefore there needs to be a public body that has insight and then oversight to confirm that everyone is developing AI safely – this is extremely important,” he said at the festival during a chat with Westworld creator Jonathan Nolan.

"This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardise it" - HAL 9000, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Musk is at it again in this new documentary, making the frightening claim that AI could spur the creation of a synthetic, unchallenged dictator that would rule mankind.

“If one company or small group of people manages to develop god-like superintelligence, they could take over the world,” he said.

Musk goes on in his sinister forecast that sounds straight out of Asimov’s classic, I Robot.

“At least when there’s an evil dictator, that human is going to die. But for an AI, there will be no death – it would live forever. And then you would have an immortal dictator from which we could never escape.”

This new documentary presents all the potential benefits and dangers of AI and dabbles on what could happen if its intelligence evolves beyond that of humans.

“We are rapidly heading towards digital superintelligence that far exceeds any human,” Musk said. “I think it’s very obvious.”

“We have five years. I think digital superintelligence will happen in my lifetime, 100%.”

Do You Trust This Computer? is currently available for free on the documentary’s official website.
