The Great War has begun.
Not the one between humans and White Walkers. The other one, taking place between HBO and The Leakers.
While we all sit around trying to figure out how Game of Thrones will end, HBO is coming up with ways to stop us.
According to a report in The Morning Call, HBO’s president of programming Casey Bloys says multiple endings will be shot to confound The Leakers.
“I know in Game of Thrones, the ending, they’re going to shoot multiple versions so that nobody really know what happens,” Bloys said. “You have to do that on a long show. Because when you’re shooting something, people know. So they’re going to shoot multiple versions so that there’s no real definitive answer until the end.”
Hmmm, could this all be a bluff?
Game of Thrones is shot over multiple countries with a huge cast and a tonne of sets and props. It seems incredible that they would actually shoot whole scenes just to stop The Leakers from, er leaking.
But as The Morning Call noted, there is a precedent for this kind of thing.
Back in 2007, The Sopranos‘ creator David Chase reportedly filmed three different endings to the show in order to keep the ending a secret.
Chase definitely managed to surprise everyone – The Sopranos has one of the most talked about endings in the history of television. Abruptly cutting to black, the show left Tony frozen in a moment, his life hanging in the balance. For the record, I think Tony died.
The game has changed a bit in 10 years. Social media, hackers and high-profile leaks are more of a thing these days, so Game of Thrones might have a tougher job ahead when it becomes to protecting its secrets.
One scene that these leakers got wrong was “Cersei awakens in a bed soaked with blood (her last scene)”. Either this will happen next season, or perhaps it was filmed to throw The Leakers off the scent.
My only request is that they shoot at least one ending in which Hot Pie is the Prince Who Was Promised and true saviour of Westeros.
Only pies baked with properly browned butter can save the day.
