In response to an episode of Rick and Morty, McDonald’s has sent Szechuan McNugget Sauce to the show’s co-creator.
It all started in April when Adult Swim aired the first episode of Season 3 of the acclaimed animated series.
In the episode, brilliant and abrasive mad scientist Rick reveals that he must travel to a memory to get some limited-edition McDonald’s Szechuan Sauce.
It turns out that the sauce released as part of a tie-in with Disney’s 1998 movie Mulan, which is set in China.
After the episode aired, fans created a petition for McDonald’s to bring back the sauce. To date, the petition has racked up over 37,000 signatures out of its 50,000 goal. Be the change you want to see in the world, people.
You can do something about it. https://t.co/ZV7G3MVJKK

Adding to the Szechuan Sauce hysteria, a 20-year old packet of it sold for $14,700 ($AUD 18,483) on Ebay in April.
McDonald’s isn’t one to pass up an opportunity for some viral marketing, so on the same day that Episode 2 of Season 3 aired, show co-creator Justin Roiland was sent a jug of the good stuff, courtesy of McDonald’s Chef Mike.

Accompanying the jug was a message from Chef Mike claiming that the Sauce had been brought back from Dimension C-1998M, a place where it’s always 1998.
“We wish we could’ve brought more sauce through, but we couldn’t risk keeping a portal like that open,” wrote Chef Mike.
“Think about it. If you knew in 1998 that McDonald’s would have All Day Breakfast in 2017, would you really want to stay in 1998? Of course not. If we left the portal open, we’d have puka shells, bucket hats and boy bands as far as the eye could see.”
Chef Mike also added that a few other lucky fans would get to experience the sauce but it is unclear who that will be.
Disney is working on a live-action version of Mulan which will be released in 2018, so we may just see the Szechuan Sauce return on a large scale.
Meanwhile, if you are really desperate to try it, you can give this recipe a whirl. It appeared on the Rick and Morty subreddit in April.
However, The Redditor does note that the recipe is “a tribute” rather than an identical recreation.
Rick and Morty currently airs on Adult Swim and Netflix.
