His inclusion in the seventh season was announced at South by South West earlier this year, and Sheeran’s fans haven’t been disappointed by the first episode.
Sheeran pops up as part of a merry band of travelling soldiers. They’re singing a tune which Arya (Maisie Williams) comments on as she walks past.
“For hands of gold are always cold, but a woman’s hands are warm,”
The tune was adapted from lines in one of the many Game of Thrones novels. In an interview with Billboard, the show’s composer, Ramin Djawadi, spoke about the song he created for Sheeran – “It’s pretty cool. He sings a piece that I wrote with lyrics that came from the book…It was kind of like [Season 3’s ‘The Bear And The] Maiden Fair,’ where I went in and wrote melodies for lyrics from the book. Ed sings those lyrics and he’s great.”
During the SXSW panel which announced the cameo, executive producer David Benioff explained that Sheeran is a favourite of actress Maisie Williams. “For years we were trying to get Ed Sheeran on the show to surprise Maisie and this year we finally did it,” Benioff explained.
