Turnbull strikes back.
Earlier in the year, President Trump took our Prime Minister to the cleaners when he savaged him on the phone for a refugee deal he signed with the former president, Barack Obama.
Sean Spicer then doubled down on the disrespect, repeatedly referring to him as Prime Minister ‘Trumbull’ – though, to be fair, this is probably due to his general incompetence rather than any deliberate dig.
Well, Malcolm has finally swung back.
The PM was speaking to Canberra’s press gallery last night at Parliament House’s Mid-Winter Ball.
The event is usually off the record, but somebody leaked the footage to Channel Nine’s longtime political Laurie Oakes who’s made the vision public.
Throughout the address, Turnbull does his best Trump impersonation (it’s surprisingly good) – taking the mickey out of the President and himself for their awkward relationship and poor polling numbers.
“It was beautiful. It was the most beautiful putting-me-at-ease ever,” he jokes.
“The Donald and I, we are winning and winning in the polls. We are winning so much, we are winning, we are winning like we have never won before,” he says.
No word yet on if this means we are going to with America yet – but knowing Trump’s ego, I wouldn’t be surprised if the US defence forces based in Darwin start pulling out the big guns…
