On Tuesday, Hawaii became the first U.S. state to enact law which adopts goals of the Paris Agreement.
Even though U.S. President Donald Trump pulled out of the Agreement last week, Hawaii’s Governor David Ige went ahead and signed the bill anyway.
“Our island communities lead the way when it comes to climate change impacts and policy,” Ige said in a Facebook Live video of the signing. “Many of the greatest challenges of our day hit us first and that means that we also need to be first when it comes to creating solutions.”
“We are the testing grounds”, he continued. “As an island state, we are especially aware of the limits of our natural environment. We see the impacts of our actions very close to home…Climate change is real, regardless of what others may say.”
Ige went on to explain that despite federal actions, it is now up to individual states and governors to do something about climate change. So basically, it’s a nice way of saying “F U Trump, we’re gonna try to save the planet anyway.”
Ige signed two bills – one that aims to reduce greenhouse emissions and one that will establish a task force to improve soil health in Hawaii.
Trump is a known Earth Hater, Climate Change Denier and Very Naughty Boy.
No one was particularly surprised when Trump announced he was pulling the U.S. out of the Paris Agreement last month. Trump has said that climate change is a hoax created by the Chinese and that he feels the world “is laughing at us”.
As is often the case, it wasn’t exactly clear what Trump meant. He has a habit of spouting “word salad” like this:
And recently invented a nonsense word.
Trump, don’t worry. The world isn’t laughing at America, actually, we are started to feel kind of sorry for it. Trump, the world is laughing at you.
America now joins Nicaragua and Syria as the only countries who have not signed the Paris Agreement. Even North Korea signed. North Korea, people! Take a deep breath and consider this for a moment. Kim Jong Un called Trump “selfish” for not signing. Wew, lad.
The New York Times reports that Hawaii has joined the U.S. Climate Alliance, which is now 10 states strong and includes California, Washington and New York. The alliance plans to uphold the Paris Agreement with or without the help of the federal government.
This is not the first “F U” that Hawaii has delivered to Trump in recent months. In March, a federal judge in Hawaii extended his previous ruling blocking Trump’s “travel ban” that restricted certain people (specifically Muslim) from entering the U.S.
Wait a minute, wasn’t Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson raised in Hawaii? And doesn’t he want to be president in 2020? These bold moves by the state will be a great platform for him to run on. It’s happening again, isn’t it? America is going to elect a celebrity.
Well, at least this one can sing.
