U.S. President Donald Trump told the Russian Foreign Minister and Russian Ambassador “highly classified information” during their visit to the White House last week, according to a new report.
Citing current and former U.S. officials, The Washington Post reports that the details Trump dished out were so sensitive the U.S. doesn’t even share them with their allies, let alone the Ruskies.
The meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak took place in the Oval Office just one day after Trump’s erratic firing of FBI director James Comey.
In the interest of national security, the Post is withholding some of the information that Trump shared. However, the Post asserts that the president gave out some details about an ISIS plot and named a city in the Islamic State’s territory where a threat has been detected.
Since the Cold War, a president sharing information – classified or not- with the Russian government has been considered taboo, but Trump is no regular president.
The Post believes that Trump’s actions will do significant damage to the fight against the Islamic State, a sentiment echoed by the officials that exposed Trump.
“I don’t think that it would be that hard [for Russian spy services] to figure this out.”, one former intelligence official said.
“Russia could identify our sources or techniques.” said a senior U.S. official.
“Trump seems to be very reckless, and doesn’t grasp the gravity of the things he’s dealing with, especially when it comes to intelligence and national security”, said a former senior U.S. official close to current administration officials.
Due to Trump’s erratic behaviour, there is a tendency for his supporters to read into it and offer alternative
facts explanations for his actions. Over on the r/The_Donald subreddit, Trump’s most rabid fans refer to it as “4D chess“.
They believe that Trump is so smart that he is able to do things that appear dumb on the surface, but actually, have some deep strategizing behind them.
Along with Trump’s explanation for the firing James Comey, this latest gaffe is what it is: a blunder.
Rarely, he might still get things right. As the old saying goes, a stopped clock is accurate twice a day. But for the most part, there is no deeper meaning. Trump does what he does because he wants too.
The truth is Trump is careless and he suffers from poor judgment. It’s no wonder that Gallup currently has his approval rating at 38%. 4D chess? Sadly, it’s more like 1D checkers.
