The trailer for the fifth season of Netflix’s incredibly successful original series is out, so the series isn’t too far away!
Season 4 left the Litchfield inmates in a tense standoff between Daya and the abusive and unhinged CO Humphrey (Michael Torpey), frozen within a riot of unmonitored prisoners.
The riot was spurred on by the death of Poussey, and the lack of justice in the facility’s processes. In so many ways, ‘Orange is the New Black’ continues to bring contemporary issues to the surface, as Poussey’s on-screen death was aired during the height of Black Lives Matter protests in America.
Speaking about the Season 4 cliffhanger, Laura Prepon (Alex) told The Hollywood Reporter, “The riot is a cool place to go because it really happens. We’re dealing with that and we’ll see the aftermath. Nothing is taboo for Jenji [Kohan], she goes there and she doesn’t steer us wrong.”
What creator Jenji Kohan really set up was a vast network of loose ends that have left fans with a number of questions – Will Daya (Dascha Polanco) shoot that gun? What will happen to Crazy Eyes (Uzo Aduba)? How will Taystee (Danielle Brooks) cope with Poussey’s (Samira Wiley) death? What the heck is going to happen with the facility’s management?
And this little exchange doesn’t leave us too hopeful for Alex and Piper’s (Taylor Schilling) future –
Piper: “We’re staying out of trouble”
Alex: “That’s right. If we see trouble, we’ll turn around and walk the other way.”
Season 5 will be released on Netflix on June 9 2017, a fact which was revealed through this cryptic date announcement.
