Camera comparison: Does the Google Pixel beat the iPhone 7 Plus?

One of the biggest selling points of the iPhone 7 Plus was the exceptional dual camera. Now the Google Pixel is on the market. How does it stack up?

Techly asked our resident designer and smartphone lover, James Daly, to put both phones through their paces and see which one came out on top.

Interestingly, the Google Pixel received the best-ever DxOMark Mobile score of 89, a review which lauded the “level of detail unexpected from a smartphone camera”. The Pixel’s 12.3 MP camera was praised for its low noise, good colour and B&W contrast and fast autofocus.

The iPhone 7 Plus’ 12 MP camera is yet to be reviewed by DxOMark and, as such, there is no comparable score currently available.

How do you think the two cameras compare?

Even though the smartphone cameras are edging dangerously close to profesh camera status, neither of them are intended as professional tools. On the basis of being used as an impressive tool for amateurs, the Google Pixel comes out on top.

The autofocus makes taking good shots easy as pie, and the detail exacted in these shots is really top notch. There are some colour balance discrepancies, but deciding between them will likely come down to individual preference.
