Magritte’s surreal paintings are given the virtual reality treatment with Unreal Engine 4

The painter who brought us the apple face man (Son of Man), the bowler hat-wearing man shower (Goncola), and the pipe painting (which wasn’t really a pipe at all), has finally had a virtual reality makeover.

That’s right, Rene Magritte’s artwork is getting even crazier, thanks to artist Ali Eslami.

Using video game software Unreal Engine 4, Eslami was able to create a virtual reality tour of Magritte’s most famous masterpieces.

Eslami’s hyperrealistic renderings depict some of Magritte’s best work, including Evening Falls, The Domain of Arnheim, and The Listening Room by way of The Unexpected Answer door.

Unreal Engine 4 is a free program for game development, virtual reality and architectural projects.

The UE team gives you all the tools, features, platforms and source codes, then when you start making money from using Unreal Engine, you pay 5 per cent royalties after your first $3,000 of revenue per product, per quarter.
