Finally! Proof that every country song sounds the same

I don’t mean to burst your country music bubble, but there’s something you should know if you’re a fan of the genre. Are you ready? Can you handle the truth? Ok, here it is: every country song sounds the same.

YouTuber Sir Mashalot (AKA Gregory Todd) thought as much, writing, “I created this mashup as an experiment to see if I was crazy, or if I really was hearing the same hit country song over and over again, just sung by different artists. Turns out I wasn’t crazy…”

The six songs he used in the mashup are:

If you listen to each song separately, you’ll see just how alike each tune is.

Here are Sir Mashalot’s thoughts behind the video he made.

I just want to be clear that this Mashup is all in good fun. I am not attempting to bash these songs, the artists, or country music in general. I understand and even appreciate why the ‘formula’ continues to dominate the airwaves – not only in country music, but in pop and other genres as well. I simply enjoy mixing and producing on Pro Tools, and when I heard the striking similarities of these particular hits, I thought it would be fun to throw them all in a mix and see what I could come up with. And it looks like people are having fun with it too, so I couldn’t be happier!

… As an aspiring songwriter/producer living in Nashville who, like so many, has come to realise how (understandably) difficult it is to break into the business, my next experiment will be to write a new song as the 7th entry to this mashup (hence the “To Be Continued” at the end of the video). I figure hey – at the very least, they won’t be able to say it doesn’t sound like a hit!

It almost makes you want a refund for the 99 cents you spent in iTunes. But then again, it’s not just country borrowing the same tune. Ever heard just how alike Beyonce’s Halo is to Kelly Clarkson’s Already Gone? Well, turns out both artists had the same writer. Guess he was having a slow month for inspiration when he wrote one of those hits.
